'Tales Told’ - New album released 11th October 2004
This Autumn welcomes the return of one of Liverpool’s favourite song-writing sons and a refreshing progression to a more natural, stripped-down sound which includes acoustic guitars, banjos and harmonies. More recently associated with producing Mercury-nominated albums by The Coral and The Zutons, Tales Told captures Ian Broudie moving on to the next chapter in what has been an eccentric musical journey. ‘It felt like going home doing this album. Picking up a guitar and strumming. Dead simple.’ Explains Ian.
Tales Told is just that, songs about your life and how you live it, ‘It’s hard to be specific, the songs aren’t usually about one thing, they’re about many things that overlap, eventually coming together as one idea.’ Broudie’s recent listening includes songwriters Johnny Cash and Nick Drake, ‘Some songwriters have a knack of saying things in a direct way. Music can be guarded and cynical these days so I wanted to do something different to everything else.’ Says Ian.
The album began about 3 or 4 years ago before Ian became distracted by some young lads from Hoylake, ‘I’d started writing the album and then I heard The Coral and I started putting my energy into producing their records.’ Tales Told then morphed from Ian and an acoustic guitar to having guest musicians from these recording sessions in Liverpool. Members of The Coral and The Zutons have contributed and are proud of their work as James Skelly explains, ‘I love the album, it’s boss. I reckon it’s some of the best stuff he’s ever done. A lot of it was written before he even worked with us.’
This is an album with so many highlights that just grows and grows the deeper you get – check the twanging ballad that is Smoke Rings, the folk-skank of Always Knocking, the off-kilter skiffle of Got No Plans to the bossanova of Lipstick.
Ian’s first band were Big In Japan, a band so diverse they numbered future members of Siouxsie And The Banshees (Budgie) and the KLF (Bill Drummond). They were also one of the bands, along with Joy Division and Cabaret Voltaire, to grace Fac001 the poster famously designed by Peter Saville in 1978 for the Factory club night at the Russell Club in Manchester.
Once Ian realised life in a studio was preferable to life in a tour van, Echo & The Bunnymen became the first full-time production job, producing the Crocodiles and Porcupine albums. Following this Ian produced albums for Terry Hall, The Bodines, The Fall, The Pale Fountains and Dodgy amongst others before concentrating on his own songs as The Lightning Seeds.
Looking to the future, Tales Told seems to have become a happy trigger for more work, ‘I want to get on and do another album now.’ Looks like there are plenty more tales to be told.
